FAQ
What can I do?
Q: What is FAME?
A: FAME, the Framingham Arts Movement for Excellence, is made of concerned parents who believe arts education is essential for a fully rounded child.
Q: When and why was FAME founded?
A: Fame was begun in 2002 in response to proposed cuts to Framingham's arts programs, the elementary school instrumental music program in particular.
Q: What has FAME accomplished?
A: FAME has accomplished these things:
-
FAME's advocacy helped preserve the elementary school instrumental music program and has helped prevent cuts to arts programs during tight budget times.
- FAME members are an integral part of the Superintendent's Fine Arts Task Force, which has been meeting since spring 2004. The Task Force has produced a series of recommendations to enhance arts education in the Framingham Schools. Among those recommendations are:
- That the full-time Fine Arts Director position be restored. The position existed for many years, was removed when the then-director retired, and has now been re-built as a co-directorship.
- That middle schools dedicate more time to art and music instruction. The norm is now one out of very six days. FAME recommends the time commitment be at least two of every six days, a level consistent with that of many other districts.
- That there be more coordination and communication between the school levels, so that younger students see where they can go, and older students put their experience to work helping the younger ones.
Q: Is FAME a fundraising organization?
A: Yes. FAME accepts donations for the FAME Fund and the Steven Engel Memorial Music Scholarship and the FAME Fund. See Donations.
Q: Does FAME have a Website?
A: Yes. The URL is www.framinghamfame.org.
Q: What are FAME's goals now?
A: FAME's current goals are:
- To see that the goals arrived at through the Superintendent's task force are achieved this year.
- To become a permanent parent-teacher-administrator organization to support the arts in the schools.
- To raise funds through contributions and grants to enhance public school arts education.
- To support arts in the schools by raising awareness of concerts, exhibits and performances.
Q: What can I do?
A: Some things you can do are:
-
Join the mailing list, so you can receive e-mail updates of FAME's activities.
- Volunteer to raise awareness of arts education and to raise funds to enhance arts education. Volunteer to raise funds through grant-writing and other activies.
-
Make a Donation. FAME accepts donations in any amount. Donations to the FAME Fund are used to purchase instruments, costumes, art materials and other needs of Framingham public school students. Donations to the Steven Engel Memorial Music Scholarship. See Donations.
-
Speak with school officials and school committee members to inform them of your interest in the arts and in your belief that arts education is necessary for a full education.
